The Monte Rosa massif is the site of one of the most spectacular construction projects in Europe: amidst ice, snow and rock, one of the biggest, technically most innovative mountain lodges is being built.
In order to transfer the extreme wind forces, the mountain lodge will be anchored in the rock by means of a circular steel structure with centre braces. A timber structure will be mounted on this steel core, tapering slightly towards the top. In order to lessen the snow load, the roof surface is steeply inclined. The light-frame structure is visible practically throughout the inside of the building. The envelope, in contrast, will be built of a raw aluminium skin, with a 30 cm thick layer of insulation behind it.
A 120 m² photovoltaic system will be integrated into the south face, that will supply electricity to the whole building via a battery. A 60 m² thermal collector will deliver adequate hot water. All in all, the new Monte Rosa lodge will be 90% self-sufficient in terms of energy (OEKONEWS).Last page update: 18.02.2011
